What this means

Your home page has one <h1> element and only one. That heading states what the page is, and every other heading on the page sits below it as an <h2> or lower. Failing means the page has no <h1> at all or has two or more.

How we test it

We fetch your home page, following at most 3 redirects, and count every <h1> opening tag in the HTML, not only in the visible hero. A count of exactly one passes. Zero fails, and two or more fails, and in both cases we report the number we found.

Why it matters

Headings are structure for crawlers and screen readers. A crawler uses the H1 as the strongest statement of what the page is about, and a screen reader user navigates by jumping between headings, so a page with no H1 has no top and a page with several has no clear one. Component-based sites drift into this because each block renders its own top-level heading. The Fix Kit audit checks for exactly one H1 on every page in the sitemap.

The fix

Make the heading that states what the page is the only <h1> on the home page and change every other <h1> to <h2> in the page or the components that render them. Then run node scripts/seo-audit.mjs https://YOUR_DOMAIN/sitemap.xml, which reports the H1 count for any page that does not have exactly one. The full runbook is in the Fix Kit, Module 02.
